Wireless transmit rate selection

Wireless devices are faced with a fundamental tradeoff between the rate at which they transmit data and the distance over which they can communicate. Unlike many previous efforts, my approach to rate selection addressed the fundamental problem: wireless channel prediction. By leveraging latent channel information, analyzing channel measurements, and emulation-based analysis I was able to develop a more robust rate selection algorithm. This algorithm – CHARM – was the first wireless LAN rate selection algorithm to exploit the reciprocity theorem to obtain channel information on the transmit path without transmitting data.
